Abe Woody allowed four runs to the Birmingham Barons in the eighth inning as the Barons rallied past the Carolina Mudcats 5-4 on Tuesday night at Five County Stadium. However, with one out, Woody gave up four consecutive hits including back to back doubles as the Barons scored four times to take the lead, one they would not relinquish. Birmingham (25-33) answered with a single run in the top of the fourth as CJ Retherford singled Jim Gallagher home to pull the Barons to within three. With Carolina (24-33) leading 4-1 in the top of the eighth, Woody (L 0-1) came out for his second inning of work after a perfect seventh....
Mudcats fall 5-4 to lose series, any shot at the playoffs ...
The Mudcats need a win to hold off their inevitable elimination from the playoff chase in the Southern League’s North Division, while Birmingham has been the league’s worst team since April. The Mudcats are better early but the Barons are better late, coming back to take a 5-4 victory and the series. Southpaw Travis Webb (6-8) will take the hill for the Mudcats against Matt Long (6-8). Both teams are quiet for the first three innings before the Mudcats get to Long. Mike Costanzo hits a two-run double to center, and later scores on a wild pitch to make it 4-0....
